In everything give thanks

in everything give thanks“Thanks” is one of those few words that parents teach their children from the time they begin to speak. Isn’t it very cute and sweet when a little child says “thanks” without being prompted when being gifted or offered something, bringing joy and pride to the parents when their child is considered well-mannered, polite and grateful by everyone around.  “Thanks” is an everyday word we use with numerous people, friends or strangers to acknowledge something we have received from them. But, most of the time we take our everyday blessings for granted and do not feel a need to give thanks to the Heavenly Father. How joyful He would be when we His children give Him thanks?

The Bible says “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). ‘All circumstances’ includes life, death, success, failures, joy, tears, health, sickness, wealth, poverty etc. Most of the time, during our times of blessings, we fail to acknowledge and thank GOD, and during the tragic/failing events of life we do not find a reason to thank God.

Recently, one of my close friend met with a major accident and was in the hospital for a week before he went to be with the Lord. His deteriorating health condition at the hospital troubled all the loved ones. What a pain it would be to see their son suffering even to breathe, and here was this mother saying she is Thankful to the Lord for keeping her son alive for a week, while most of the people who witnessed the accident thought he lost his life on the spot. Behind the anxiety, tears, pain, agony the family was thankful though they couldn’t comprehend why such a tragedy was permitted in their lives. I was amazed at their gratitude during such tough times. Some of us were equally thankful for the life of witness this friend lived for Christ and his realization of an eternal life after death. What a comfort that is, and gives a reason to thank the Lord even after losing a loved one.

We often thank God when we receive something, but have we thought of thanking Him for what He is, and for HIS Grace that we  receive even without asking or deserving. To empathize with us, God sent HIS son Jesus to tread through our paths. He knows exactly how we feel, because Jesus the Only true Living God humbled Himself as a man thus becoming a little lower than angels (Hebrews 2:7) bridging the gap between God and man. He was mocked, rejected and underwent suffering so that we may not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16, Romans 6:23). Even without our asking, He did it, He bore the shame for us; He loves us, comforts us and gives us peace. When we are thankful for this unmerited favour He has provided us, how pleasing it is for Him. The everyday blessing He gives us, when counted one by one, doesn’t it surprise us?

So my dear friends, Let us give thanks in everything because the Lord’s thoughts for us are higher than what seems best to us (Isaiah 55:9), and He has plans only to prosper us even if it does not seem so (Jeremiah 29:11). Let us give thanks because He is faithful to His promises (Psalm 145:13). Let us give thanks because it helps us to fully confide in Him, and express our belief that He is able to provide what we have asked for (Philippians 4:4-7) even before receiving it. Let us give thanks because of the very gift of life today (Psalm 150:6) And above all let us give thanks for His Grace which is sufficient to meet all our needs (2 Corinthians 12:9, Philippians 4:19).

May each day be a day of thanksgiving, rejoicing in the Lord always for HE is in control of our lives from the beginning till the end.
