“Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:7,8

This beautiful verse can teach us a lot about how to live our whole lives. Sometimes everything gets so muddled up and we need to get back to basics. The basics are that God is our help. He’s done it all for us by his son Jesus Christ. What are the implications of this in your life? Well, they could be something like this: Because God is your help, you sing in the shadow of his wings. Your soul clings to him and his right hand upholds you. The first sentence describes your state of mind. As Christians we have every right to feel like this all the time. God is our help and we sing in the shadow of his wings. No matter what the circumstances, even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death or have no idea what the future will bring, we can rejoice in the Lord, knowing ourselves to be under his protection. The last battle has been won and you have been freed from the horror of judgment according to your sins. Is your state of mind a witness to this? The second sentence describes the mutual nature of our relationship with God. The verb ‘clings’ makes it very graphic. It makes me think of a baby lemur, holding tight onto its mother as she swings from tree to tree. I think the baby would have to hold on very tight indeed not to fall down. In the same way we cling to God, not because he’s so busy swinging from battle to battle that he has no time to worry about holding on to us, but because we know he is our help and salvation. We cling to him even tighter than the baby lemur to its mother; it’s our very deepest inside parts that cling to him, not just our arms. It is his right hand and nothing else that upholds us. We need nothing else to uphold us. If we had Him and nothing else, we would still have everything. If your sight is clouded with confusion or pain or indifference, pray with the psalmist: “Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” And then be still in the presence of the Lord.
