God is Always Near You to Strengthen You

“So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.” 1 Kings 19:8

Those were turbulent times in Israel under the rule of King Ahab. He married Jezebel, a sidonian woman and began to serve and worship Baal. The Lord had caused rains to stop because of the sins of the king and the people of Israel. There was severe famine and drought due to this all throughout the land. Finally Elijah ordered King Ahab to gather 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah at Mount Carmel where God will reveal himself. When they had gathered there, the sacrifice of the prophets of Baal and Asherah were not accepted by their false gods. But Elijah’s sacrifice was accepted by the fire of the Lord that fell and burnt down everything on the altar. Then Elijah in the valley of Kishon slaughtered all the prophets of Baal and Asherah. Soon after Jezebel heard about what Elijah did, she sent a messenger to tell Elijah that she will kill him wherever she finds him. Elijah feared Jezebel and ran alone into the desert and stayed under a broom tree. He pleaded to God to take away his life, as he is the only prophet left in Israel as everyone else was killed. But the Lord strengthened him twice through His angel reminding of the long journey he has to make to the mountain of God. This was the same Elijah brought down the fire of God and slaughtered 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah sometime back in faith, now running for his life fearing Jezebel. Sometime back with a lot of opposition that I faced, I really felt I was not fit to serve him. The burden is too heavy for me to bear, I even questioned God’s calling for my life. But God strengthened and reminded me of my calling and the long journey that I have to take. Many times, we as children of God become weary in our journey seeing oppositions after oppositions and trials after trials which even make us question our calling. In those times, we forget the mighty things that God has done in us and through us. But we need to remember that, just as He strengthened Elijah in his toughest times, He is also waiting near us to strengthen us to take the Journey ahead. Elijah was able to take the long journey which God had set for him and met Him at His mountain where he received the instruction for the future. There will be severe opposition when we stand for the truth and justice. But do not lose faith as God is always near you to strengthen you as He did to Elijah.
