“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.” John 14:15-16
The greatest gift one can receive as a believer in Jesus Christ is God’s guidance through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As a child of God, the greatest responsibility we have on this earth is hearing the voice of God and responding to His guidance in every step of our lives. In a world where we are surrounded by opinions, ideas and suggestions influencing our decisions every day, it is very easy for us to get lost in those noises and fail to recognise the most important voice, the voice of God. In this modern world, we tend to receive lots of information that demands us to react, our life can easily drift away from the path God laid for us. God’s guidance will be available only for those who truly desire it and regard his say in their lives. Jesus says in John 14:15-16, “If you love me, you will obey my command, and I’ll ask the Father, and he will give you another counsellor who will be with you forever”. Jesus was physically guiding the disciples while He was on this earth, but when He left, Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to guide them into all the truth (Refer John 16:13). The Holy Spirit guides us to all truth, that means He guides us to Jesus who is the truth (Refer John 14:6), and helps us to follow Him. The Holy Spirit leads us to the cross where Jesus brought us forgiveness, where we learn to humble ourselves to follow and serve Him. He takes us through the wilderness and the garden of Gethsemane where we are strengthened and comforted to do God’s will, and finally He takes us to the place where Jesus dwells, to dwell with Him for eternity. The Holy Spirit also convicts us of sin, righteousness and judgement. He corrects us when we fail and drift away, and puts us back into the right path when we obey. He gives us fruits to live as witnesses for Jesus and different gifts to serve Him. Above all, as He communicates to us what He hears from God, He enables us to pursue God’s will on this earth everyday of our lives. (Refer John 16:13). When we are in truth, we have perfect peace even through difficulties. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.” The word of God is like a light which guides us. The joy that is received by accomplishing God’s will cannot be replaced by anything in this world, and nothing would be more satisfying as a follower of Jesus to look back at our life and say at the end that I travelled the path God laid for me. The voices, opinions and suggestions that come across to us in many forms and that come through our own emotions, experiences and feelings can never be right and gentle as the Saviour’s voice. We might have not regarded God’s guidance as the priority in our lives till now. But as we step into this New Year, let’s remember that, of all the blessings that we receive from God, His guidance is the greatest blessing. Being a Christian is doing God’s will on earth and for that we need His guidance. May this year be a year of God’s guidance which leads us to all truth and gives us the perfect peace!
