Grant me a discerning heart

Well, everyone has a choice to make especially while entering into a New year. It’s our choice that defines the course of our walk with the Lord. In order to make a choice, we need an discerning heart. Job 32:8 says, “But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand” The Bible makes it clear that the spirit of a man is what makes him understand things. It’s more like a compass that directs our way towards God.

Let’s see why we need this discerning/understanding heart that God loves to bestow on us:

To Differentiate Between Good and Evil:
“Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” – Romans 12:9
To differentiate between good and evil, one need to have a discerning spirit which comes from God. We ask God for long life, prosperity and good health. But King Solomon asked for a Discerning/Understanding heart to differentiate between good and evil. God was well pleased with his request that He gave him more than he asked for (Refer 1 Kings 3:9). Lets ask God to help us discern between good and evil.

To Learn His Commandments and Understand His Testimonies:
“Your hands have made me and fashioned me:Give me understanding that I may learn your commandments” – Psalm 119:73
“I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your testimonies.” – Psalm 119:125
He is the creator, who fashioned us and He wants to make us complete by teaching us His commandments and testimonies. God was very thoughtful when He created us. He knows what we need. Let’s give the ourselves (vessel) to our Creator and ask Him to fill us with His grace so that we will be like how He intended us to be obeying His commandments and keeping His testimonies.

So in all, God sets Blessing and Curse before us and also gives us the freewill to choose between them (Refer Deuteronomy 30:19). We would certainly need His Spirit to choose between Right and Wrong. In this world, we are more than daily presented with life changing decisions and we would need His Spirit to help us choose the Good part. Like Mary who chose the Good part in simple areas or like Solomon who chose God’s wisdom in major areas, be aware that we would always have to make a choice every single hour throughout our life.

“The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.” – Psalm 14:2,3

As we enter the New Year, May we seek the guidance of the Spirit of God to always make the right choice and lead our lives in His way!!
