“Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Acts 3:6

This devotional comes to you at a point when in some parts of the world hatred is shown against Christians especially in India where the intention behind the human service of Christians are ridiculed and questioned. After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the early Apostolic church was active, focused and functional. Three of the main activities of the Apostles were waiting on God in prayer and praise (Acts 2:42-47), adding believers in to the church by preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38-41) and serving the needy with physical needs (Acts 6:1-4). Apart from that, the gifts (1Corinthians 12:8-10) and the fruits (Galatians 5:22-23) of the Spirit were operating in different ways. The church was expressive using the gifts for the glory of God. The church was inspired by the Holy Spirit. It was inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, and whatever they did, they did it “in the name of Jesus Christ”. When Peter and John found the crippled man on their way to the temple, they gave him what they had, healing in the name of Jesus. God’s love for this world in Jesus Christ is expressed in many different ways such as preaching, teaching and healing. God established the seed of love in us through faith in Jesus Christ who inspires us also to act in many different ways. Jesus commissioned us to preach the Good news to all the people of the world (Mark 16:15-16) and throughout the world Christians are working for this cause. And not only that, He expects us to love and serve others (Matthew 25:31-46), (Luke 10:30-37), (Galatians 2:10). These acts are inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. These are times when people expect us to do service without using the name of the one who called us and inspired us to do. How can we hide the very reason which makes us to preach, love and serve? We cannot hide the person who inspires us and helps us to do the work we do. We who follow Christ should be able to stand up and say in the lines of Paul, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16). Jesus Christ and his Gospel cannot be hidden behind our services to humanity but should be expressed in every area of our ministry. Whether it is preaching, serving, educating or any other human service, it needs to be done in the name of Jesus. If the world wants to name our service to the humanity in the form of preaching the Gospel, serving the poor, providing education, building hospitals and our yearning to deliver human souls from destruction as “conversion”, let them name it. Lets stand up in love and say to them that we are inspired both by our words and actions, and we will continue to inspire through His grace till we see transformation in the lives of people in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). We will continue to show love, not because we are good but because we are loved by God who loves all the people of this world! Let us continue to serve with Humility, Sincerity and Love!
